Choosing to study abroad is a major step, and for many international students, finding a supportive academic environment is just as important as choosing the right programme. We spoke with Elina Andreou - an international student from the Optometry programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at the University of Latvia about their experience studying in English, working on their thesis, and preparing for a future in clinical optometry.

Choosing Optometry in English

For many international students, finding a high-quality programme taught in English can be challenging. For Elina, that became one of the key reasons for choosing FST.

“It was one of the few Optometry programmes in the European Union taught in English.”

The programme immediately left a positive impression after arrival in Latvia.

“Everything felt very organized.”

That sense of structure and support continued throughout the studies, especially for international students adapting to a new academic environment.

“The study coordinator would always help if we had questions.”

Supportive Professors and Research Experience

A major part of the experience at FST is the close collaboration with academic staff and supervisors. According to Elina, professors actively encourage independent thinking and support students throughout their academic development.

“The professors are quite encouraging, and as I am currently in my thesis process, I can say my supervisor has been very helpful throughout the whole process.”

Research and thesis work became one of the most meaningful experiences during the programme.

“I guess doing the thesis had the biggest impact on me.”

The programme also provided opportunities beyond lectures and coursework, helping students build practical and academic experience throughout their studies.

Modern Equipment and Practical Skills

One of the aspects the student valued most was access to modern technology and equipment used during studies.

“The accessibility of modern equipment.”

Alongside theoretical knowledge, the programme helped develop practical optometry skills and prepared the student for future academic and professional goals.

“The programme prepares me for future studies in clinical optometry.”

The international environment also played an important role in the experience, allowing students to meet and collaborate with peers from different countries and backgrounds.

“I Always Had the Feeling I Made the Right Choice”

Sometimes there is no single defining moment — just a consistent feeling that you are where you are supposed to be.

When asked whether there was a moment that confirmed she had made the right decision by choosing FST, Elina shared:

“Not sure if there was a specific moment — I just always had the feeling.”

That quiet confidence reflects the overall experience the student describes at FST: organized studies, supportive staff, practical learning opportunities, and a welcoming academic environment.

For future international students considering the programme, the message is simple:

“It’s great and I would recommend it.”
