“It Feels Like Family”
From the very beginning, Mariya felt welcomed by the academic environment at FST.
“It feels like family because everyone helps me when I need them.”
Having already completed previous studies at the university, she was familiar with some of the academic staff before joining the programme. That trust and connection played an important role in her decision.
“My professors Aiga Svede, Tatjana Pladere, and Evita Kassaliete helped me when I got stuck, and then I decided to choose this programme because I knew I could rely on them.”
That sense of support became one of the defining aspects of her experience throughout the programme.
Learning to Trust Herself
Like many students entering a demanding academic programme, Mariya remembers that the beginning was not easy.
“It was a bit difficult to understand things. I was unsure if I was doing things correctly. A lot of questions were going on in my mind.”
Over time, however, those uncertainties gradually turned into confidence. One of the biggest influences came from professors who encouraged students to think independently and develop their own ideas.
“My professor always asked me to use my brain — and I loved it.”
She especially appreciated being challenged to think critically and express ideas in her own words.
“When I used ChatGPT, my professor rejected the assignment and asked me to write it in my own words, which helped me become more creative.”
For Mariya, this approach became an important lesson not only academically, but personally as well: learning to trust her own thinking and abilities.
Research, Conferences, and Determination
One of the most impactful experiences during her studies was a research project related to eye movement.
At the time, Mariya was balancing multiple commitments alongside her studies, which helped her develop strong resilience and time management skills.
“But now, when I look back, that project was worth it.”
Despite the challenges, the hard work led to valuable academic opportunities. During the programme, she participated in an international conference and also published a scientific article.
These experiences allowed her to gain confidence in research, communication, and independent work — skills she now considers some of the most important outcomes of the programme.
“I learned how to work independently.”
A Community That Encourages Growth
For Mariya, one of the most valuable aspects of studying at FST was the opportunity to collaborate with others and build professional connections.
“For me, the most valuable preparation came through collaboration and the opportunity to build professional contacts, which are essential for future studies and career development.”
The international environment also helped broaden her perspective and allowed her to interact with students from different backgrounds and disciplines.
At the same time, what left the deepest impression was not only the academic experience, but the human support she received during difficult moments.
“At one of the more difficult moments during my studies and work, one hug from my professor Evita gave me energy — and that hug I will never forget.”
That moment became a symbol of the compassion and encouragement she experienced throughout her studies.
“At First It Will Be Hard — But Later You Will Find Opportunities”
Looking back, Mariya says the moment she realized she had made the right decision was not connected to a single academic achievement, but rather to the constant encouragement she received from the people around her.
“Everyone helped me and encouraged me to improve myself.”
For future international students considering the programme, her advice is honest and encouraging:
“In the beginning it will be hard. You will not understand everything, but later you will find more and more opportunities.”
Her story reflects an experience shared by many international students at FST — one where challenges gradually turn into growth, confidence, and lasting memories.
