Moving to a new country for studies is never easy. A new culture, a different academic system, and life far from home can feel overwhelming at first. But for Parveen Sehrawat at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), that uncertainty gradually transformed into confidence, growth, and a deeply rewarding academic experience.   From hands-on laboratory work to supportive mentors and an international academic community, studying Physics at FST became much more than just earning a degree — it became a journey of personal and professional development.

Choosing Physics at FST

For Parveen the decision to study at FST came from a long-standing passion for physics and a desire to learn in an environment that combines theoretical knowledge with practical research experience.

“I have always been interested in physics and wanted to study in an environment that focuses on both theoretical knowledge and practical research.”

What stood out most about the programme was its balance between lectures, laboratory work, and independent research. Access to modern laboratories and experienced researchers also played an important role in choosing the programme.

“I wanted to learn from experts and gain practical experience that could help me in my future academic and professional career.”

The international environment at FST made the programme even more appealing, offering the opportunity to study and collaborate with people from different countries and backgrounds.

Adapting to a New Country and Academic System

Arriving in Latvia from India brought many new experiences and challenges at first.

“Everything was new for me — the teaching style, the environment, and adjusting to life in another country.”

Like many international students, adapting took time. However, the welcoming atmosphere at FST made the transition much easier.

“The professors were supportive and always ready to help if something was not clear. My classmates were also friendly, which made it easier to adapt and feel part of the programme.”

Over time, the unfamiliar became comfortable, and Parveen began to truly enjoy both academic life and the broader experience of studying abroad.

Learning Through Research and Mentorship

One of the defining aspects of the programme was the strong emphasis on critical thinking and research. Rather than focusing only on memorizing theory, professors encouraged students to analyze, question, and interpret scientific results independently.

“They encouraged us to ask questions, discuss ideas openly, and think beyond just memorizing theory.”

The student also spoke warmly about the guidance received during thesis work, especially from supervisor Jana Andžāne and lab assistant Andrei, whose support made a lasting impact on the overall experience.

“Their patience, advice, and willingness to help with even the smallest challenges made my academic experience smooth and enjoyable.”

Research work became one of the most valuable parts of studying at FST. Through laboratory experiments and thesis research, the student developed practical scientific skills and gained experience applying theoretical concepts to real-world problems.

“I learned how to analyze data, work carefully in the lab, and approach problems more scientifically.”

The programme also encouraged participation in academic events and conferences. During the studies, the student attended two scientific conferences and has applied to participate in another one, gaining insight into the broader research community and scientific collaboration.

Building Skills for the Future

Beyond academic knowledge, the programme helped develop skills essential for future studies and international career opportunities.

Through coursework, research, and collaborative projects, the student strengthened abilities in problem solving, critical thinking, scientific analysis, communication, and teamwork.

“The program has given me the confidence and skills to move forward and explore new opportunities internationally.”

Now in the final semester, Parveen is focusing on completing the thesis while exploring future opportunities in research and further studies.

A Supportive International Community

For Parveen, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience was the sense of community created by professors, staff, and fellow students.

Working alongside students from different countries and disciplines helped broaden perspectives both academically and personally.

“Interacting with students from different countries broadened my perspective, improved my communication skills, and created a friendly and collaborative environment.”

When asked about the most valuable aspect of studying at FST, the answer was clear: the supportive atmosphere combined with hands-on research experience.

“The best part has been the overall atmosphere — supportive, collaborative, and motivating.”

“I Realized I Had Made the Right Decision”

Looking back, Parveen describes the experience at FST as both fulfilling and transformative. While there was no single defining moment, the realization came gradually through positive experiences, successful research work, and the encouragement received from mentors and family.

“Today, by God’s grace, everything is going very well. My studies, research, and overall experience at FST have been positive and fulfilling.”

Parveen also expressed deep gratitude toward family members whose support and encouragement made the journey possible.

For future international students considering FST, the advice is simple:

“Stay curious, ask questions, and embrace every opportunity.”

With its supportive academic environment, international community, and strong research opportunities, the Faculty of Science and Technology continues to provide students with an environment where they can grow academically, professionally, and personally.
