University of Latvia’s team programming competition took place on Friday, October 24, where the two best teams advanced to the ICPC Central European Regional Contest (CERC), which will be held on December 5-7 in Wrocław, Poland.

This year, six official LU teams competed for the chance to go to the ICPC semifinals. The contest included 12 problems, 5 hours of time, with each team using only a single computer. In recent years, this selection competition has also attracted more high school students, with three such teams participating this year, representing Riga State Gymnasium No. 1, Engineering High School of Riga Technical University, and Riga State Classical Gymnasium.

The LU team “Skrupulozās zemenītes”, consisting of Matīss Kristiņš, Kristaps Štāls and Valters Kalniņš, solved 10 problems and won the competition with a clear lead. The second place went to the team “tum tum tum” (Krišjānis Petručeņa, Emīls Lecinskis and Raivis Atteka), who solved 7 problems. The third-place team, “Randoms” (Vadims Truhanovs, Mikhail Korotkov and Andrejs Pirozenoks), also solved 7 problems but had a larger penalty time.

Among the high school teams, first place went to “LIDL”, consisting of Ričards Jansons from Riga Classical Gymnasium, Gustavs Gusts Rietums and Kārlis Cīmurs from RTU Engineering High School, who solved 7 problems. Alongside the Latvian participants, teams from other Baltic universities also took part; the best among them was Kaunas University of Technology’s team “human eror” who solved 9 problems. The two most difficult problems remained unsolved by any team.
