This week, the University of Latvia (UL) is hosting the international conference EUSFLAT 2025 (The 14th Conference of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology). The event is organized by the Department of Mathematics of the UL Faculty of Science and Technology in collaboration with the EUSFLAT. The conference series is held biennially. During the event, the General Assembly of EUSFLAT is also scheduled to take place.

EUSFLAT is a non-profit European society devoted to promote and disseminate the methods, techniques and developments of Fuzzy Logic and related technologies. Founded in 1999, EUSFLAT encourages the scientific communication and collaboration among its members, organizing, promoting and sponsoring conferences, workshops and seminars. Indeed, the biannual EUSFLAT conferences bring together researchers in Fuzzy Logic and related technologies from all over the world. The society advises associates and companies on subjects regarding Fuzzy Logic and it is a member of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) representing the European researchers at the IFSA council.

A brief overview of the conference activities.

DAY 1 — July 21, 2025

We had a great first day of the EUSFLAT 2025 conference. After the opening ceremony with contributions of the conference General Chairs Susana Montes (also current President of EUSFLAT, University of Oviedo, Spain), Martin Štěpnička (University of Ostrava, Czech Republic), Svetlana Asmuss (University of Latvia), the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Aigars Ekers (University of Latvia), and the Organizing Chair Olga Grigorenko (University of Latvia), there was the first plenary talk given by Oscar Cordon (University of Granada, Spain). We had a great chance to listen to spectacular applications of computational intelligence in forensic anthropology.

The afternoon sessions started with the second plenary talk that was given by Irina Perfilieva (IRAFM) that summarized the scientific contribution of our member and friend, Prof. Alexander Sostak, the father of the fuzzy logic school in Latvia, who unexpectedly passed away before we could celebrate the opening of this conference.

The plenary lecture was then followed by a Round Table that was again dedicated to Prof. Alexander Sostak. Many thanks to Janusz Kacprzyk (Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences), Bernard De Baets (Ghent University, Belgium), Vladik Kreinovich (University of Texas at El Paso, USA), Irina Perfilieva (IRAFM), and Juan-José Miñana (Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain).

The whole day was full of reports in three parallel sessions and we closed it with a splendid icebreaker.

DAY 2 — July 22, 2025

The second day of the conference started with a splendid plenary talk given by Humberto Bustince (Public University of Navarra, Spain). The afternoon plenary talk was given by energic Katarzyna Kaczmarek-Majer (Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and IRAFM).

Apart from many interesting lectures, we also had a round table discussion. The speakers were Oscar Cordon (University of Granada), Irina Perfilieva (IRAFM), Bernard De Baets (Ghent University), Vladik Kreinovich (University of Texas at El Paso), Janusz Kacprzyk (Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences), and Ulrich Bodenhofer (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Hadenberg, Austria), the role of the moderator was taken by Martin Štěpnička (University of Ostrava).

The second day was concluded with the General Assembly of EUSFLAT.

DAY 3 — July 23, 2025

The third day of the EUSFLAT 2025 conference started with fabulous, deep and provocative plenary talk (title: It’s All Convolution, Stupid!) by Bernard De Baets (Ghent University) and then continued with three parallel sessions.

After two days of hard and long work, often lasting till rather late "office" hours, the afternoon plan for the third day included an excursion (the organizers had prepared three different excursions to choose from). Unfortunately, we cannot split our photographer Lena Kononova into three parallel persons to capture all the beauty of the Rundale Palace, Latvian nature by the Engure lake, but at least some pictures from the guided tour in the Riga old town we may provide.

DAY 4 — July 24, 2025

The fourth day of the EUSFLAT 2025 conference was opened by a plenary talk given by Ulrich Bodenhofer (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria), the third President of the EUSFLAT society. It was a great talk entitled "AI for Good: Machine Learning in Medicine and Healthcare – Basics, Use Cases and Prospects".

Then the conference continued with three parallel sessions. Just the difference was that this day, we ended rather early (4:30 pm) in order to refresh and move to Jurmala. The fourth day of the conference was closed by a gala dinner, supported by great live and DJ-performed music, a sunset above the Baltic Sea, and an amazing atmosphere.

The award ceremony was an essential part of the gala dinner. Let us summarize the awardees.

DAY 5 — July 25, 2025

The fifth day of the conference started with an interesting and deep plenary talk plenary talk, given by Andris Ambainis from the University of Latvia (title: Mathematical Ideas in Quantum Algorithms). The plenary talk was then followed by three parallel sessions.

The conference closing ceremony was held by the conference General Chairs Susana Montes (University of Oviedo), Martin Štěpnička (University of Ostrava), Svetlana Asmuss (University of Latvia), and the Organizing Chair Olga Grigorenko (University of Latvia).

The next EUSFLAT conference will be held in Bari (Italy), in 2027.
