Abstract
Since before the advent of semiconductor theory, semiconductors have contributed to a vast array of technology and understanding in both the engineering and physical sciences. I will present a brief introduction into electrical transport in low dimensional structures such as two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems, quantum wires and quantum dots from an experimentalists point of view.
Low temperature techniques and fabrication techniques for the application of single electron pumping at high frequencies and high magnetic fields will be discussed. The use of semiconductors in the production of hydrogen from water using photochemical reactions will also be shown in the context of a new joint collaboration recently established between the Physics Department and HySa housed in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
