CONFERENCE
SUSTENET (Sustainable Thermoelectrics European Network) is a new COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action that launched in October 2025 and will run for four years. COST funds bottom-up networks that unite academia and industry across Europe and beyond, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and career development.
Jana Andžāne, leading researcher and head of the UL FST ICP Green Energy Research Group, says about joining the project: “The participation of the Green Energy Research Group in the international COST initiative SUSTENET will strengthen Latvia’s position in the development of sustainable energy technologies. It will promote scientific excellence, ensure access to new research infrastructures and knowledge, and foster closer international cooperation, enabling Latvian scientists both to contribute to and benefit from Europe wide innovations in thermoelectric technologies.”
Aligned with the European Green Deal and the EU Action Plans on Critical Raw Materials and the Circular Economy, SUSTENET promotes sustainable energy ecosystems and efficient resource use. Thermoelectric technology directly converts waste heat into electricity and also supports cooling, heating, and hybrid applications. Wider deployment requires a stronger supply chain; SUSTENET addresses this need by accelerating interdisciplinary collaboration with industry, advancing research excellence, assessing environmental impact, and building skills through targeted training and dissemination.
SUSTENET operates through four interconnected Working Groups:
WG1: Scaling Sustainability through Artificial Intelligence
WG2: Applications and User Cases
WG3: Business Development and Supply Chain
WG4: Dissemination, Communication, and Training
The Action will host workshops, meetings, training schools, and short-term research exchanges.
