SUMMARY:Scientific Models and Modeling in Science Education
DESCRIPTION:Modern physics education is based on the idea that students learn more effectively when the learning process reflects scientific practice\, at the center of which is scientific modeling. The seminar will explore the following questions: What is a scientific model\, and what does scientific modeling look like in the learning process?\nThe seminar will examine the role of scientific models and modeling in the natural sciences. It will cover modeling theory\, the Modeling Method of Instruction (Hestenes)\, and Hesse’s Theory of Analogies\, using examples from high school physics.\nThe seminar will be led by Prof. Mark Lattery (University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh)\, author of Deep Learning in Introductory Physics and President of Modeling Teachers International.\nThe seminar will be held in English\, and the number of participants is limited.\nOrganized by:University of Latvia\, Faculty of Science and TechnologyDepartment of Physics\, Physics Education Research Group\nContact: jelena.kosmaca@lu.lv
